What Happened
On March 11, the International Energy Agency (IEA) authorized a record-breaking coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves from member nations. The release is the largest in the agency’s history, surpassing the 2022 release during the Ukraine-Russia war.
Why It Matters
With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed and 20% of global oil supply disrupted, strategic reserves are the only short-term tool available to prevent oil prices from spiraling even higher. The release aims to buy time while diplomatic and military options are explored.
However, strategic reserves are a temporary fix. At current release rates, reserves can cushion supply for weeks to a few months, not indefinitely. A lasting solution requires either reopening the strait or finding alternative supply routes.
